I’ve conducted hundreds of reference checks, and reviewed and improved talent referencing processes for executive search firms, talent advisory firms and corporations. So, I understand the importance of rigorous talent referencing.

Most importantly, thorough and accurate referencing requires a customised verbal interview with the referee, usually conducted by phone – not an emailed template approach.

While online reference checking services might have their place in certain circumstances, they fall short in a number of areas. For instance, in a phone call you can ask the referee follow up questions about any statements that require further probing. Or you can explore any ‘red flags’ that might have been raised at the candidate’s interview.

Comments provided during a verbal reference can be a rich source of information.

To sum up, a verbal interview approach will be extremely helpful in shaping your decision to hire.

Why conduct reference checking independently?

Cost

The cost of making the wrong hire is significant – in time, money and productivity. If you don’t have the in-house capability to do rigorous talent referencing, using an independent service can mitigate the risks.

Time pressure

In-depth reference checking is time consuming, requiring extensive questioning, pursuing elusive referees and reference report writing. An independent can do all this when you and your team are under pressure.

Unconscious bias

This can easily override good judgement during in-house reference checking. An independent service is almost always free of this type of bias.

Fake referees

Sadly, they exist, so conducting due diligence prior to talent referencing is crucial. This includes checking a referee’s mobile and business landline, LinkedIn profile, and elsewhere online.

Third-party perspective

Using an independent service introduces a third-party perspective. This brings another vote and level of analysis to the hiring table.
